Building Connections: Samira McCarthy

*Note: As of 2025, plans for the building of the Pastoral Centre are on hold.

As a new bride coming to Canada in 1966, Samira McCarthy found community and life-long friendships at Holy Rosary Cathedral.  The church has always been important to her  and as a 54-year member of the parish she fondly reflects on the generations of people who have graced her life through her involvement at the church.

“I’m a traditionalist who believes strongly in culture and heritage.  Supporting this project will ensure that the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of our community  will continue to be met for future generations,” she says. “The vision of the project reflects my values and hope for the future.  By preserving the 100-year-old Cathedral and creating a new permanent workspace for the Archbishop and his staff, we are securing a way for people to maintain their faith in a spiritual dimension to their lives.”

Samy is retired from Campion College, University of Regina, where she was professor of English for 41 years, Acadamic Dean the last 7 years.  She sang in the Holy Rosary Cathedral choir for almost 4 decades, and remains active in the parish as Chairperson of the Pastoral Council, Lector, and Eucharistic Minister. She is excited to be part of the Rebuilding Our Church Campaign cabinet. As she says, “It is important to me that I contribute what I can to preserve the structure of the cathedral and the creation of the new archdiocesan centre, which provides guidance and structure for all the Catholic parishes in southern Saskatchewan.

“By working together on this re-building project, we will build stronger connections within this  Archdiocese, and preserve this beautiful building for future generations to gather in worship and friendship. Please consider joining me in this communal effort by pledging to this campaign.”
